On what many expected to be a loss for the conservative party in the United Kingdom, July 4th will remain a memorable day for all Tories after their devastating defeat at the poll by the Labour Party. All exit poll suggested the Tories were heading to a defeat but not as devastating as it came.
Result after result decimated hope of any Tories resurgence or survival. One after the other, the Tories lost their seat at the parliament. Prominent Tories leaders were not spared either. One of the shocking results was that of the former Prime Minister, Liz Truss who lost her South West Norfolk seat. She took to the social media app X, to thank her constituency, supporters and voters.
The election result clearly show that Rishi Sunak led Conservative party was completely out of touch with the reality of British people. Most of the votes that went to Labour Party were anger votes against the Conservative Party.
It is not yet certain whether Rishi Sunak will declined to lead the Conservative party after its worst election performance over decades. However, the Tories will need a leader immediately to gather the remnants of their party. In the event that Rishi Sunak decline to lead the Tories, the battle for the leadership of the Conservative party will then begin. Pundits are yet to see who will emerge as the leader of the Conservative party and possibly rejuvenate the party which has lost the people’s trust.
